A Thirty-Year Conversation with Light
Taken together, the five collections in this Retrospective Exhibit reveal an artist whose work is defined less by a single photographic style than by an enduring investigative impulse. Sherwood moves comfortably between natural history, macro photography, abstraction, botanical imagery, and figurative studies. What connects them is a persistent desire to look beyond the obvious.
High-speed capture, macro optics, controlled illumination, reflective surfaces, natural symmetry, and monochrome processes are tools in the service of visual discovery. These permit the photographer to enter territories that ordinary observation cannot easily reach.
This retrospective also offers a welcome reminder that photography is not simply about recording what is in front of the lens. Artistic intuition helps mold the images: what to isolate, how to illuminate, when to wait, and when to recognize that an apparently unremarkable subject contains the beginnings of something extraordinary. Sherwood captures that artistry inside curiously compelling scenes.
The exhibition Etched by Light demonstrates that light does more than reveal objects. It shapes them, transforms them, and sometimes makes them almost unrecognizable. In Sherwood's hands, it becomes a means of inquiry—a way of uncovering structures and relationships that might otherwise remain unnoticed.
After thirty years of imagery, the most compelling achievement may be the continuity of the artist's curiosity. The subjects have changed, the techniques have evolved, and the visual language has expanded; the underlying impulse remains remarkably consistent: to stop, to look closer, and to discover what may have passed by.
Ultimately this retrospective is an invitation to recover the pleasures of seeing, reminding us that the world has never been short of wonders.

Reviews
-
Sherwood's images bridge the gap from total abstraction to integral weavings of forms within nature.
- Greg Gorman
- His images represent crystalline moments in our dreams.
- Stephen DiRado
- His images are an experimental canvas of light against dark
to discover new portals, hollows, and spaces in nature.
- John Ruggieri
- His bright lights and deep shadows seem to carve forms out of the air.
- Bay Windows / Cape Cod
- Sherwood examines nature with the eye of an engineer and the sensuality of an artist. His figures twist, push, and pull through rich ebony shadows and luminescent streams of light; bodies become an exploration of light and form, as their voluptuous contours abstract beauty. - Gallery Bershad/Boston
Art Prints
On display are images that represent a Retrospective of the past several decades of artful image-making.
All prints are archival quality: 10-color pigment inks on museum art paper (acid-free, OBA-free), mounted on Crescent artboard mats (archival acid-free).
Although Photoshop® is used to crop, adjust contrast, and fill in solid backgrounds, no AI or other trickery is involved. One minor exception is “Sunfl-iris” which is the composited merger of two of his images (a sunflower and iris), both of which are “honest” images individually.
Each image is in a signed (verso), limited edition of 10 (unless otherwise noted).
Size ranges for prints for sale. Frames not included (often available on Amazon, etc., or a local frame shop like C.C.Lowell/Worc). A custom framer can let you choose specific mat colors to match your aesthetic. There are several online custom-cut mat sources available (and you mount the print in the mat)
Silver gelatin prints are not readily available; contact for special order.
Local pickup or delivery to Sr Center preferred; shipping available at-cost.

WILL SHERWOOD ASCAP, ChM, AAGO - PHOTOGRAPHY BIO
A native of Johnson City, Tennessee, Will Sherwood has a multi-paletted career: engineer, musician, artist/photographer. He graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University with BSEE and MSEE degrees in computer engineering, and has Choirmaster and Associate degrees from the American Guild of Organists. He has appeared as guest soloist and member of the orchestra with the Boston Pops and has given concerts in both the U.S. and Europe.
For thirty years, he was a Sr. Engineering Manager at Intel (formerly Digital/DEC) where he managed the VLSI Microprocessor Validation Group and received two U. S. patents. In 2020, he developed Diplacusis(.com) in one ear which caused pitches to be transposed that rendered music perception distorted, causing the need to retire from his music career. He is Emeritus Director of Music (First Unitarian Church, Worcester), and Emeritus Principal Organist (Mechanics Hall). He was dean of Worcester AGO 2010-2018, and Artistic Director of the organ concert series at Mechanics Hall, Worcester, Mechanics Hall Summer Music Festival, and several Court Hill Music Festivals. Other interests include volunteering for local homeless agencies, graphic arts, historic telephony, running, organic gardening, and preparing gourmet vegetarian cuisine.
During childhood, his family encouraged his interests in music, photography, and the sciences. Photography was a serious avocation of his father in the 1950s and 60s, and he taught Will black-and-white film camera and darkroom techniques. Since 1990, he has taught studio and outdoor nature/figure study workshops, and exhibited widely.
